THEORY OF MIND

We study Theory of Mind, our ability to understand and interpret other people’s thoughts, beliefs, and emotions, across a range of social, perceptual, neural, and linguistic contexts. Our research explores how mindreading is shaped by social group boundaries and narrative experiences, how perceptual cues such as face masks, gender, and ethnicity influence mental state judgments, and how key brain regions support implicit and explicit perspective-taking. We also examine how Theory of Mind is expressed in language, using computational approaches to identify markers of mental state reasoning in clinical populations, and investigate how distinguishing one’s own mental states from those of others underpins empathy.
